Obsidian’s 26-storey tower reaches its highest point at Greengate, bringing 250 new homes and curated lifestyle amenities to the edge of Manchester city centre.
Salboy Group and Domis Construction have topped out Obsidian, a landmark 26-storey residential tower at Trinity Way, Greengate (Salford, M3), marking a major construction milestone for the joint venture development.
Designed by Studio Power and Delivered by Domis Construction in partnership with Salboy, Obsidian is a 250-home scheme set to introduce a new luxury city-centre address, alongside around 1,000 sq ft of ground-floor commercial space designed to improve the local neighbourhood offer.
Located in an area of key growth for Salford and Manchester, Trinity Way and Greengate’s are a gateway into the city centre, Salboy and Domis have helped drive the step-change transformation of Greengate, turning previously underutilised plots into a connected neighbourhood where people can live, work and enjoy the very best of both Salford and Manchester. Obsidian is the newest addition to this legacy.
This momentum aligns with long-term regeneration ambitions set out by local authorities, including a 2018 strategy/plan framework for the area. Building on the delivery of Local Blackfriars in 2019 alongside the sensitive restoration of the historic The Black Friar and the sell-out success of Fifty5ive. Recently, Salboy secured the former Renault dealership site, an approximately 52,000 sq ft plot creating the next opportunity to extend this regeneration story and deliver another high-quality scheme.
To celebrate Obsidian’s Topping Out milestone, venture partners Salboy and Domis invited a host of project stakeholders to revel in the work completed to date accompanied by views over Salford and Manchester’s border of high-rise growth. The host included Salford Government representative, Councillor Philip Cusack – Chair of Planning and Transportation who shared his enthusiasm for Obsidian and it’s positive impact on Salford’s growth. Alongside Phillip, the Topping Out cohort heard from Domis MD, Kingsley Thornton and Salboy MD, Simon Ismail:

Councillor Phil Cusack, Salford City Council starts:
“Obsidian represents a significant investment in Salford; a 26-storey, £80 million scheme that will provide 250 new homes right here in the heart of our growing community. Standing beside the completed Local Blackfriars development, it’s another clear example of how partnership, ambition and high-quality design are reshaping this part of the city.
On behalf of the City Council, I want to acknowledge the hard work of everyone involved; Domis Construction, the project team, the architects, and the many skilled workers who have brought us to this point. Your commitment and expertise are helping to deliver the kind of homes and neighbourhoods that residents can be proud of.
Salford continues to grow, and developments like this play a vital role in supporting that growth creating new homes, new opportunities, and a vibrant urban environment that attracts people to live, work and invest here. I look forward to seeing Obsidian completed and welcoming new residents to this fantastic addition to our city.”

Kingsley Thornton, Managing Director adds:
“Topping out Obsidian is a major moment for everyone involved. It is a visible marker of thousands of hours of planning, problem solving and hard work on site. For us, it is Design. Disrupt. Deliver. in action. Smart engineering, disciplined coordination and the commitment it takes to build safely at height in a live city environment.
I am proud of our teams and partners for not only driving the tower to its highest point but also setting a new build and best-practice standard that we can use in other projects moving forward. We will carry on with the same momentum through fit out and final stages as we work towards late 2026 completion.”

Simon Ismail, CEO of Salboy, said:
“Reaching the topping out of Obsidian is an important milestone and one we are particularly proud of, marking our third residential development in the Greengate area within Salford’s Chapel Wharf regeneration zone. It has been rewarding to play a role in the continued transformation of this part of the city.
Working alongside Domis, it is great to see what this partnership continues to deliver as the building now takes its place on the skyline. We look forward to progressing the final stages of construction ahead of completion.”
Beyond the main contractor delivery, the wider Domis Group is contributing specialist expertise across the project, including NOVO Integrations, Wright Landscapes, Matic Building Services, Domis Utilities and Casana Interiors, supporting coordinated delivery from structure through to services, externals and interiors.
